Parent participation is required at the score table for all matches where we are the "home" team and a line judge is needed for all matches. Feeder is the perfect opportunity to learn. The refs are patient because they know the parents are all learning. Parents are required to fill these rolls all the way through high school so learning now is very valuable!
Score Flipper: flips the score
-You watch the ref and flip the side they pointed to.
-If the ref puts their fists together with thumbs up it means redo, so if you flipped then just flip the score back.
-If team on the right scores then flip the right side for them. Team on the left scores so you flip the left for them.
Libero Tracker: Tracks the Libero going in and out and other player subsitutions. https://youtu.be/JlPpPiC4cjo
-When the libero goes in you put an L beside the number they came in for.
-When they come out you write the number for the player going back in, it has to be the same player. So if Libero goes in for 6 then 6 has to be the one to come back in. If #12 subs in for #6 then the libero can come in for 12 but then 12 has to be the one to come back in for the libero.
-In video don’t worry about 2 liberos, feeder and high school only use 1. Also, don’t worry about figuring out who the middles are. You can stop video at 5:10.
What is a Libero? The libero is a player specialized in defensive skills: the libero must wear a contrasting jersey color from his or her teammates and cannot block or attack the ball when it is entirely above net height. When the ball is not in play, the libero can replace any back-row player, without prior notice to the officials.
Scorekeeper: please watch this video. You can stop at 9:10 because we don't use that sheet. https://youtu.be/Nm9ax1CC9sM
There are a couple of things that are different between how we do it and this video.
-We only get 18 subs so when a team subs you will mark it. There is a number line on the score sheet.
-She says not to slash through sub when writing in the new one. It’s easier to keep up with who is on the court if you mark them out.
-The sanctions box in the lower left corner is rarely used. The ref will explain if needed.
-If at any point you feel confused let the ref know so they can help sort it.
-If you notice the wrong person is serving let the ref know right away.
Line Judge: Stands on a designated corner to help the ref spot where the ball hits, if it's touched, and if the server foot faults. The ref will go over all of this with you before the game.
-If ball is out hold the flag up, if no flag then hold hand up.
-If ball is in point the flag down, if no flag point down. The ball is in if it touches the line.
-If the ball hits the antenna, point at the antenna and wave the flag in a circle around your head.
-If the ball is touched by a player before going out, hold the flag up and place one hand on top of the flag.
Here are two websites with the common Referee hand signals. I would suggest looking at these just to familiarize yourself, especially if you are new to volleyball.
